Bible Journaling – Trusting in God Booklet

Bible Journaling Trusting in God

This is so exciting!  I am still in disbelief that all this is happening!  The Lord is always so perfect in the gifts He has for us and in His timing.

Bible Journaling Trusting in God by Anita C Haines

Do I have any list makers, note takers or doodlers out there?  If so you will understand the draw to anything that includes pencils, pens, markers or even paintbrushes.  I just love the feel of a good pencil or pen in my hand.  Soaking in whatever I am hearing or reading and letting it come alive as I scribe it out onto paper.  Studies have even shown that the simple act of doodling helps you concentrate, remember things, makes you more productive and helps you be present and in the moment.  In a time when there are so many distractions around us this is something I need for sure!  This is one reason I take notes during church… to keep me focused.  Otherwise, my mind and attention spins off into all directions… from the two gals chatting back and forth in the row in front of me to the the guy 3 rows back on the left unwrapping his mint.  “Squirrel!”… the struggle is real folks.  All that to say you can be assured to find me with a purse full of pens and journals full of notes and doodles.

Some of my favorite pens

In addition to taking notes in my journal I had always done the typical underlining and quick notes in the margins of my Bible.  Then in 2014, a new world of worshiping the Lord with my creativity and art began as I stumbled across the idea of Bible journaling.  This was the practice of journaling, doodling and creating art in your Bible as a way to connect with God and it has changed the way I come to His Word.  I ordered my first journaling Bible (a Bible with extra wide margins for note taking and journaling) and gathered up supplies I already had on hand.

I was so excited and couldn’t wait to get started and when my journaling Bible came I unpacked it, took a pic to post on Instagram and… jumped right in!  Umm, no.  Actually it sat for a while.  Why?  Because I was so afraid to make a mistake.  Back then there was limited information about this new thing called Bible journaling.  What if I mess up?  What if it’s not perfect?  What if I do it wrong?  Is there even a right way or a wrong way to do this?  And as with anything else when these thoughts begin to happen, guess what?  I become paralyzed or worse, end up spiraling down the rabbit hole of Google, Instagram or Pinterest.  I end up looking at what everyone else is creating and not actually creating myself.  This leaves me staring at a blank page, a blank canvas, and could even lend itself to staring at a blank life if not careful.  As always, “Trust” is what the Lord was trying to teach me.  I needed to stop trying so hard in my own knowledge and strength and rest in Him.  This is not a passive rest but one of faith, expectant hope and trust… even in the midst of fear.  Just as the eagle who spreads it’s wings and is lifted up by the winds and beautifully soars.

“But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” ~Isaiah 40:31

So with a leap of faith I finally spread my wings and jumped in to create my first page shown below.  It was not perfect and yes, if I could do it differently now I would.  But guess what?  The more time I spent intentionally focusing and meditating on scripture while creating I felt the presence of God right there with me.  I learned that it wasn’t ultimately about what the art looked like.  Yep, I seriously did just write that!  As a professional artist, of course I’m concerned with the physical result of my work.  But as I got more deeply into Bible Journaling, I learned that growth and healing occurs not in the perfection of the art, but rather in presence with God.  As a busy mom, wife and business owner it has really helped me to slow down, to be still, and rest in His Word, staying long enough to actually hear from Him and not just something to be checked off my to do list.

God is Light Bible Journaling Anita C Haines

I recently heard Christian author and speaker Jess Connolly share, “The Word of God doesn’t need beautiful imagery.  The Word of God deserves beautiful imagery.”  It’s changing our mindset from, we “have to” do this to we “get to” do this.  How awesome and beautiful is that!  God has given me a gift and if I can use that gift to help others draw closer to Him then that is my calling and my mission in this life.  If the art is what someone sees that draws them ultimately into the Word and the presence of God like I’ve personally experienced then I’m okay with that.  In fact I’m all for it!  Because when one spends time meditating on the living and active Word of God one can’t help but to be changed, renewed or even healed as God Himself is revealed.  The Lord has given us each gifts to be used for His glory and for His Kingdom and I am thrilled, humbled and honored to share my love and passion for Jesus with the world through art.

All this has lead to creating my Bible Journaling Trusting in God booklet as a tool and resource for others to encounter God through creative practice and worship.  I have found that God provides opportunities for us to honor Him and in faith and obedience we can choose to step into those opportunities or not.  This journey all started with a conversation with my sweet friend, author and speaker Rachel Wojo.  Last year Rachel and I collaborated on a Bible Journaling Workbook focused on the topic of Joy.  You can read more about that and find the downloadable workbook on Rachel’s Blog HERE.  When I received a call from Rachel this Spring asking if it was okay to pass my name along to a small publishing company who was looking for artists to work on Bible Journaling Booklets I was like, “Sure!”  I mean, why not.  I had been praying for God to lead me in how I could share the message of hope through my art with others.  Maybe this would be the opportunity?  But honestly, I wasn’t sure anything would actually come of it for a while, because things like that take time, right?

The next day started a journey that would be new, challenging and fast.  Whew!  Before I knew it I had signed a contract and was working around the clock creating and designing images that would be used by hundreds, maybe thousands of others to create with in their own journals, on canvases and in their Bibles.  Because of the extremely tight deadline there really was no time for me to rethink as I usually do and question my imperfection.  I believe this would have never happened any other way.  I’m sure I would have talked myself out of it.  God knows how to stretch and grow us.  What a crazy, awesome, wonderful experience this has been!  I totally understand now why some equate it to giving birth to a child.

So here we are, less then 1 week away from my Bible Journaling Trusting in God Booklet being released… birthed into the world.  I can’t wait to see how the Lord will use it, how the Lord will use those who use it and how the Lord will use me.  And if I’m honest, I’m a bit anxious as any new mom would be.  Hoping it’s received well and that it will truly help others encounter God.  Remembering I did as the Lord called me to do and I’m expectant for blessings as others open up their Bibles and spend time with the Lord, maybe for the very first time.  I hope you pray along with me on this journey and if lead, will help me to share it with the world.  You can hop over to Amazon to check it out or place your order.  There you will also be able to see some of the inside pages.

Summer Sunshine Wishes!

I’m sharing some “Sunshine” with you today!  You will find details below for my upcoming Sunshine Wishes class and a yummy recipe full of sunshine at the bottom of this post!  I’m starting however, with some insight on waiting… for sunshine.

SunshineSayings1.www.stampwithanita.com

It’s been a challenging Summer for me to work on any projects that require using my hands.  I’ve been dealing with a “trigger thumb” since early Spring.  And of course it’s on my dominate right hand that I need everyday.  I thought I was just overworking it and tried to give it some rest.  It’s amazing how much we use our thumb.  I can’t even begin to tell you how many things I have dropped… and broken in the last few months.  Continue reading

Easter Table 2016 www.stampwithanita.com

We had a blessed Easter with family and friends celebrating our Risen Lord.  It was such a treat to have ALL our kiddos home and even a few extra.  The pic above of our table shows the calm before the storm.  I think this is the first year I actually gave in and used paper and plastic plates. GASP!!!  I know…  I couldn’t believe it either.  But as I was setting up the table Saturday night I didn’t want to spend my time on Easter hand washing all those china dishes.  It’s okay to take a break some years and as our family continues to grow and move out our time with all of them here together is priceless. Consider it Pure Joy Bible Journaling

With all the new interest in Bible Journaling I’ve had lots of questions and I thought I would share a little more with you on what I’m doing in my Jornaling Bible… and I have a FREE gift for you today!

Jame1:2-3Bookmark.www.stampwithanita.com

At church our pastor has kicked off the New Year with a new sermon series called “1UP”.  It asks us these questions…

• What if life was like a video game?
• As we make resolutions to better ourselves emotionally, physically, and spiritually, what if we could hit the restart button and have a do-over when we mess up?
• What if we had a hero who could give us the life we long to have? Continue reading

Living With the Thorn of an Unseen Illness

2Corin12:9_www.stampwithanita.com

More labs for my Natalie today. Since Spring her life has been doctor visits, labs, tests and again more doctor visits and tests. It’s so hard to watch your child who once had an abundant amount of energy and life become stricken with an overwhelming weariness that causes her to not be able to stand. Natalie was diagnosed with POTS – Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome which makes it difficult for her to stand up without passing out. For today’s post I won’t go into a lot of specifics but you can check out this POTS overview of what she deals with daily. Today’s post is not the typical post showing a fun project, but rather a raw and honest peek into my life and heart at this moment. Continue reading

Bible Journaling

I’ve always been a note taker. There’s just something about having a pen or pencil in my hand and recording what I hear or experience that just brings things alive for me.  I have notebooks and journals full of hand scribbled notes, ideas, and doodles.  It’s fun to see that a couple of my kids are drawn to the same creative process and desire.

Bible_Journaling_www.stampwithanita.com

Although I’ve always taken notes during church sermons and Bible studies but I’ve not really journaled onto the pages of my Bible other than the typical underlining and a few quick notes in the margin.  I had always saved my thoughts for recording in a separate notebook or journal.  But thanks to fellow artist Stephanie Ackerman I’ve been introduced to a whole new world of actually doing creative journaling IN my Bible.  My favorite new group on Facebook is the Journaling Bible Community organized by artist Shanna Noel.  It has changed the way I come to God’s Word each day. You’re Made for God-Sized Dreams

Have you ever had a dream or desire that started as a quiet whisper in your heart?

butterfly_www.stampwithanita.com

For me it was a whisper that started out so subtle that for days, weeks or maybe even years it was drowned out or pushed aside as I moved through life’s daily tasks.

I even began to wonderful if I ever heard anything at all.

A few years ago I found myself going through life unable to see clearly.  I was blindly operating on “auto-pilot”.  When asked how I was doing I would even catch myself saying, “I’m surviving” or “Just trying to get through this day”.  I had gotten trapped behind negative self talk and even started to believe this was as good as it was gonna get.  Have you ever found yourself there? All The Lonely People { Part Two }

Welcome back for part two of “All The Lonely People”.  You can read part one here.

This year my “ONE WORD” is { INTENTIONAL }.

I’ve decided I live way too much of my life on auto-pilot.  A revelation that came to me while I attended Brave Girls Camp back in May of 2012.  I was awaken to the fact that it’s hard to enjoy life when you’re on auto pilot.  You miss out on all that it has for you.  So this year I am focusing on living my life with intent.  Intentional time with my Lord… with self care… with relationships… with inspiring, creating and sharing.  This new Blog as a big part of that.

One thing that I’m going to be intentional with is sending out more cards. You may think that is a no-brainer since I’m a Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator but I actually was better at that before I became a Demonstrator.  I get so busy with the prepping of classes and events that I don’t take the time to make them for myself to give. Or worse, I actually do get them made but never manage to get them sent out.  I have stacks of unmailed cards to prove it. Sad but true…

Christmas Cards and Thank You cards that I never mailed out

To continue from part one of “All The Lonely People” I am also going to be intentional with awareness of those around.  Again it’s so easy to overlook others when you are operating on auto pilot.  So many around us are hurting or lonely.  I need to have my eyes open and we all need to be gentle with one another ~ Lives depend on it.  My dear friend Melody Ross from Brave Girls Club shared in THIS incredible blog post about how it would be so propound if we could all wear a sign proclaiming what we were going through or what we needed.  We are all so afraid of what others would think… our weaknesses would be exposed.  So instead we tend to hide behind the pain, behind the loneliness, behind the screen and pretend everything is okay.

more1
I’m working on being intentional with growing and my time with the Lord as well.  I’m in the middle of Beth Moore’s “Sacred Secrets” Bible Study where she just shared with us that secrets manifest.  We may think that what is going on in our lives is hidden but it will manifest itself one way or another.

more
It may be that the disengaged or grouchy girl whose path you just crossed was up all night with a teething baby, or she has been taking care of her own mother who doesn’t remember who she is, or she just got the test results from the doctor, or someone she cares about deeply just tried to end their own life, or she lives with the memories of child abuse, or the father that she finally was able to forgive and build a relationship with is dying, or her husband is dealing with depression and she yearns for him to just and hold her tight, or maybe he just told her that his business is going under and they may lose everything they’ve worked so hard for, or her closest friend just betrayed her, or she has unfulfilled dreams and desires, or fear has paralyzed her, or she can’t remember what it’s like to not feel pain, or she is so very lonely.

Anyone of us could be that girl.  I know because I’ve been that girl. We all need a little grace at times.  We all need someone to really see us… to hear us.  So many are screaming without uttering a word.  Let’s look up from our screen and see past others eyes to find a soul.  Intentional living matters… kindness matters… love matters most…

Casting Crown does a beautiful job reminding us of this in their song “Does Anyone Hear Her”.

{ We who have strong faith should help the weak with their problems. We should not please only ourselves. We should all please our neighbors. Let us do what is good for them. Let us build them up. ~Romans 15:1-2 }

If you are the one that is crying out and feel like you are not seen or heard please know that you are not alone.  You are truly loved.  God has not forgotten you.  He sees you.  He hears you when no one else does.  I hope and pray that you can be brave enough to come out from behind your screen and ask for your deepest needs and desires.  We were not meant to do this journey alone.  Seek out a safe place of community where you can be encouraged, thrive and grow.  The Lord has promised to never leave you.  He has a plan for your life… a plan for an awesome and wonderfully fulfilled life even more than you can possibly dream or imagine.

{ For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. ~ Jeremiah 29:11 }

So now I’m off to getting some cards sent out… because it matters…
